Couples Therapy in San Francisco
& Across California
When it feels like you're having the same conversation over and over again, therapy can help you find a different way forward.
Whether you're feeling disconnected, struggling to communicate, navigating a major life transition, or simply wanting to strengthen your relationship, couples therapy provides a space to slow down, understand what's happening beneath the surface, and reconnect with each other.
When the Same Story Keeps Repeating
You may love each other deeply and still feel stuck in a pattern neither of you wants to keep repeating.
Maybe it starts with something small. A tone. A comment. A missed bid for connection. Before long, you are back in the same conversation, the same argument, or the same silence that feels far too familiar.
One of you may push harder to be understood while the other shuts down. One of you may want to talk things through right away while the other needs space. Both of you may be trying, but somehow the conversation still ends with hurt, frustration, or distance.
From the outside, your relationship may look strong, capable, and high-functioning. Inside the relationship, it may feel like you keep falling into roles neither of you wants to keep playing.
Couples therapy creates space to slow the pattern down and listen for the conversation beneath the conversation.
The goal is not to decide who is right or wrong. The goal is to better understand what keeps happening between you, strengthen communication, and begin creating a new way forward together.
How Couples Therapy
Can Help You Change the Pattern
Couples therapy helps you understand what keeps happening between you, not just what you keep arguing about.
Together, we look at the patterns that show up in your communication, your connection, and the roles each of you may fall into when the relationship feels strained. From there, we begin creating new ways to respond, repair, and reconnect.
Communication & Conflict
Many couples come to therapy because communication has started to feel harder than it should.
You may find yourselves having the same disagreement repeatedly, struggling to express what you need, or leaving conversations feeling misunderstood. One partner may feel criticized while the other feels ignored. One may become more urgent while the other becomes more guarded.
In therapy, we slow these moments down so you can better understand what each person is trying to say, what keeps getting missed, and how to move through conflict with more clarity and care.
Relationship Patterns
Most couples are not struggling because one person is the problem.
More often, the relationship has developed a pattern that both people participate in, even if neither person wants it to continue.
In therapy, we work to identify that cycle without turning either partner into the villain. When couples can see the pattern more clearly, there is more room for curiosity, repair, and change.
Instead of “this is who we are,” the story begins to shift toward “this is where we get stuck, and this is where we can begin again.”
Connection & Intimacy
Disconnection does not always happen all at once.
Sometimes it builds slowly through stress, parenting, work, grief, resentment, life transitions, or years of not having enough space to truly turn toward each other.
Couples therapy creates space to pay attention to what may have been pushed aside, including emotional safety, trust, friendship, desire, respect, and the small moments that help partners feel close again.
A Thoughtful, Collaborative Approach to Couples Therapy
Every couple brings a different story into therapy.
Some couples come in during a season of conflict. Others come in because they feel disconnected, uncertain, or tired of trying to figure things out alone. Some want to repair what has been hurt. Others want to strengthen what is already working.
My approach is collaborative, relational, and grounded in helping both partners feel seen and understood.
Together, we work to build trust, create awareness around the patterns shaping your relationship, and take practical steps toward meaningful change.
Gottman Method Couples Therapy
The Gottman Method offers a research-based framework for understanding what helps relationships function well over time.
In therapy, this may include strengthening friendship, improving conflict management, rebuilding trust, increasing emotional connection, and creating more intentional ways of turning toward each other.
Rather than focusing only on what is not working, Gottman Method Couples Therapy helps couples better understand the foundation of the relationship and identify specific areas where change can begin.
Internal Family Systems
Internal Family Systems offers a way to understand the different parts of ourselves that show up in relationships.
In couples therapy, this can help partners notice what happens internally during conflict, disconnection, or moments of vulnerability. A vulnerable part of you may deeply crave closeness, while a protective part steps in to shield you by shutting down, becoming defensive, staying busy, or trying to manage the interaction.
When couples begin to understand these protective responses with more compassion, there is often more room for honesty, repair, and connection.
Couples Intensives
Some couples benefit from having more time and space than a traditional weekly therapy session can provide.
Couples intensives offer a focused opportunity to slow down, go deeper, and work through relationship patterns with more continuity. This format can be helpful for couples who feel stuck in recurring conflict, are navigating a major transition, or want to make meaningful progress in a more concentrated way.
This is not about rushing the process.
An intensive may be a good fit if you are looking for extended, concentrated blocks of time (such as half-day or multi-day sessions) to better understand what is happening in your relationship, improve communication, rebuild connection, or create a clearer path forward together.
It is about creating enough space to stay with the conversation, understand the pattern more fully, and begin practicing new ways of relating to each other.
What to Expect From Couples Therapy
Starting couples therapy does not mean your relationship is failing.
It means you are willing to look honestly at what is happening and create space for something different.
In the first sessions, we will begin by understanding your relationship story, what brought you to therapy, what each of you is hoping will change, and the patterns that tend to show up between you.
From there, we will work together to identify goals and create a process that feels grounded, collaborative, and realistic for your relationship.
Couples therapy may include exploring communication patterns, strengthening emotional connection, practicing repair, understanding each partner’s needs, and building new ways of responding when conflict or distance appears.
The work is not always easy, but it can create more room for honesty, compassion, and meaningful change.
